Sculpt OS, the general-purpose OS from the Genode project, shipped 26.10 on Friday, and it’s a big one: it now runs on Genode’s own microkernel instead of a third-party one.
What’s new
- The custom kernel is built for Genode and Sculpt. The team says it’s more “micro” than any other kernel Genode supports and fixes long-standing CPU scheduling and kernel-memory problems.
- VirtualBox 7 components for running VMs, replacing VirtualBox 6.
- Better webcam handling and UK keyboard support.
My take
Microkernels are where security people dream and most of us never go. “Sculpt OS finally stands on Genode’s own footing” is a milestone worth a look if you like alt-OS projects.
God Bless, and May the Source Be with You!
