Astrolab’s uncrewed FLIP rover heads to the lunar south pole on Griffin-1 later this year, carrying HPE’s Spaceborne Computer-4.
The quick version
- It’s the first test of high-performance computing and AI on the lunar surface. Astrolab CEO Jaret Matthews calls it the “first GPU on the moon.”
- The computer is light, compact and fanless, with a low-power 64-bit CPU and a GPU, tied into FLIP’s cooling and powered by batteries and solar.
- Astrolab is one of two companies NASA picked to build a drivable rover for Artemis.
My take
Edge computing doesn’t get more “edge” than the Moon. Running AI right where the data is, instead of waiting on a long link home, is the right idea.
Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
