Pope Leo XIV sent a video message to the interfaith peace meeting in Assisi on Tuesday, and one line jumped off the screen at me: “there is no such thing as a holy war: only peace is holy.” He told nations to stop preparing for more wars and said war can never be waged in God’s name.
Why it hit me
I’m not Catholic, but I’ll say amen to that one all day long. People have slapped God’s name on bloodshed for centuries, and every time it’s a lie about who He is. Jesus didn’t come swinging a sword to build a kingdom. He’s the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), and He said the peacemakers are the ones who get called children of God (Matthew 5:9).
My take
Real peace isn’t a treaty, it’s a Person. The Holy Spirit is the only One who can turn a heart of hate into a heart that loves its enemy. So yes, pray for the leaders and the negotiators, but also pray for a move of God in the places where the fighting is worst, because revival does what diplomacy can’t.
