Ubuntu 26.10 (“Stonking Stingray”) entered final freeze with an October 15 launch target. Final freeze is the “stop the feature parade” gate — fixes only, please — before images go golden. If you have been waiting to test, this is the window where the tree stops moving under your feet.
What I do at freeze
Spin the daily (or beta) on a spare box. Check NVIDIA/wifi on the laptops I actually own. Note which PPAs will break. Decide whether production hosts wait for .1. Freeze week is for homework, not for surprise dist-upgrades on Friday afternoon when nobody wants a rollback.
If you ship appliances on Ubuntu, freeze is also when you lock your seed lists and rebuild golden images so QA and prod match. Future you will not remember the random package you held with sticky tape. Document the holds. Better: eliminate them.
Calendar
Target launch is October 15. Treat that as a plan, not a covenant. Wait for the release announcement, read the release notes for kernel and installer surprises, then upgrade on purpose. Eager is not the same as ready.
I am writing these as lab notes for people who actually patch boxes. If a link goes stale, chase the upstream project page. The habit matters more than any single advisory number in a blog post.
Schedule the maintenance window while the advisory is still boring. Waiting until it is exciting costs more.
Have a blessed day!
