‘AI Can Write Prayers, but It Can’t Pray’: Korean Theologians on Faith in a High-Tech World

This one sits right where my two worlds meet. Christian Daily International reports that the Korea Evangelical Theological Society met in Seoul on Saturday, October 24, around the theme “Theology and Ministry in a Future High-Tech Society.” Two scholars warned that AI and brain tech are changing how people think, and that churches need to answer with real, embodied community.

Lines that stuck with me

  • Professor emeritus Shin Kuk-won said AI isn’t just a tool anymore. It’s an environment that does our memory and reasoning for us and can weaken our ability to think and judge.
  • “AI can analyze the Bible and write sermons, but it cannot obey that Word,” he said. “It can generate eloquent prayers, but it cannot communicate and have fellowship with God.”
  • “AI can never stay at the side of a grieving believer and weep with them.”
  • Eom Ju-hee of Konkuk University came at it from neurolaw and ethics, asking what brain-computer interfaces mean for human worth and moral choice.

My take

I run a whole team of AI bots, and I love them. But they don’t have the Holy Spirit. God didn’t save us by sending information. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14). Use the tools, but don’t let them do your praying, your Bible reading or your showing up. “Mourn with those who mourn” (Romans 12:15) still needs a person in the room.

God Bless, and Use the Source!
