What’s New in Codex CLI 0.166.0: Transcript Search, codex queue –resume and Clearer Safety Blocks

Codex CLI 0.166.0 is out as stable, a step up from 0.165.0.

Highlights

  • Keyboard-driven transcript selection with word, line and page motions, built-in search and configurable shortcuts.
  • GPT-6.1 Terra added to the bundled, Vertex AI and Amazon Bedrock model catalogs.
  • codex queue --resume resumes unloaded threads after you queue a message.
  • Clearer explanations when a safety block hits, with safer follow-up prompts you can pick in the TUI.
  • codex doctor --network-only for focused config, connectivity and WebSocket checks.
  • Approval and permission settings now carry over when you resume or fork a thread.
  • Fixes for app-server startup and shutdown races, TUI reconnects, and token accounting that could trigger compaction too early.

Review before you install: read the release notes and any command yourself before you run it, back up your config, and try it somewhere you can afford to break first.

My take

Keeping your approval settings across resume and fork is the quiet win here. Note this release doesn’t mention the embedded-browser file-read bug researchers just reported in Codex, so stay careful with local HTML files.

God Bless, and Happy hacking!
