An update to my first look at Plasma 6.9, which covered the weather widget and new on-screen keyboard.
What’s new this week
- Faster zoom: KWin’s zoom effect now skips low-contrast pixels in flat, solid areas, so it costs a lot less.
- Config cleanup: stale desktop icon position entries get cleared, fixing a 2023 bug where that file grew until Plasma slowed down or crashed.
- Discover can copy and share appstream:// links for installed Flatpaks.
- Plasma 6.8.2 fixed crashes and a KWin regression that could hurt gaming performance. 6.8.3 is due in November.
- KDE Frameworks fixed a 15-year-old bug with file completion on USB drives.
My take
A config file that grows forever and slowly kills your desktop is the kind of bug that makes Linux feel flaky. Love seeing it fixed.
God Bless, and Happy hacking!
