Apple has sent a new wave of mercenary spyware threat notifications, this time to users in 99 countries, 9to5Mac reports, citing the Financial Times and TechCrunch.
- German lawmakers and government officials started getting the alerts last Thursday. Germany’s BSI told recipients to “assume their device is no longer secure.”
- The FT says the attacks used a zero-click flaw. The attackers reportedly only needed the target’s phone number.
- Apple doesn’t say who’s behind the attacks or confirm whether a device was compromised.
My take
A zero-click bug with no public fix is not okay, so this one Needs Garlic. Most of us will never get one of these alerts. But if you’re a journalist, an official or an activist, or you just want the strongest setting, turn on Lockdown Mode and keep iOS updated. If you get one of these alerts, take it seriously and get expert help.
God Bless, and Needs Garlic!
