Artemis II’s Launch Tore a Hole in the Ionosphere Big Enough to Throw Off GPS

A study from National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan found that Artemis II’s April 2026 launch disturbed the ionosphere more than any rocket launch measured so far, Space.com reports.

  • Researchers used precise ground GPS networks normally used to track tectonic plates
  • Changes in electron density were equivalent to positioning errors of several meters
  • Up to 10 times stronger than disturbances after Starship test launches, even though Starship has about twice SLS’s liftoff thrust

The researchers say effects like this could matter for self-driving cars and drone positioning.

My take

Wild that a launch leaves a mark you can measure in GPS. With more heavy launches coming, worth understanding.

God Bless, and May the Source Be with You!
