Chatbots Can’t Absolve the Lonely

We write about AI and agents a lot here on EtherNinja, and I think a lot of these tools are genuinely useful. But a story out of Manila this month stuck with me. A chatbot can listen all night. It can’t forgive you, it can’t pray for you, and it can’t love you back.

A crisis of intimacy

At the Asian Catholic Digital Missionary Assembly, a panel of church media folks warned that young people pouring their hearts out to AI chatbots may point to a bigger “crisis of intimacy” (LiCAS.news). Father Ritchie Vincent of India asked why it’s easier for young people to open up to a machine than to another person, and his answer was honest: “we have difficulty in accepting and listening to people without judging, without condemning them.” That should sting all of us who say we follow Jesus.

The numbers back him up. Common Sense Media found that 72% of U.S. teens have used an AI companion, and about a third have taken a serious conversation to an AI instead of a real person (Common Sense Media). An MIT Media Lab and OpenAI study of nearly 1,000 people found that the more someone used a chatbot each day, the lonelier they tended to be and the less they socialized with real people (study). That’s a correlation, not proof, but it sure isn’t a cure.

Vincent also raised privacy, and as a network and security guy, that’s the part that makes me twitch. Kids are typing their deepest stuff into commercial platforms, and in September 2025 the FTC opened an inquiry into seven companion-chatbot companies, asking how they test for harm to kids and teens and handle user data (FTC). Intimacy without stewardship isn’t care. It’s exposure.

What a chatbot can’t do

Edwin Lopez of the Philippines said the line that stuck with me most: “God did not just send the message; He sent Himself in the flesh.” That’s John 1:14: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14, ESV). God didn’t send us a really good chatbot. He came Himself.

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever … I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” – John 14:16-18, ESV

The Holy Spirit isn’t a simulation of presence. He is the presence of God living in you. I believe nobody meets you at 2 a.m. like He does.

And God puts us in a family. “God settles the solitary in a home” (Psalm 68:6, ESV). A chatbot can’t forgive sin. Only God does that: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins” (1 John 1:9, ESV). But James says, “confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed” (James 5:16, ESV). God designed healing to flow through real people praying real prayers over each other. You can’t lay hands on somebody through an API.

Put the phone down

So yeah, build wiser tools and fight for kids’ privacy. Then put the phone down and show up. “Bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2, ESV). Sit with somebody. Pray with them. Tell them what Jesus did for you. And if you’re the lonely one reading this, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted” (Psalm 34:18, ESV). Reach out to a real person and a real church this week. Have a blessed day!
