FFmpeg 9.1 Is Almost Here With an APV Vulkan Encoder and GPU Frame Interpolation

FFmpeg 9.1 is in its release process, Phoronix reports, and the Vulkan work keeps coming.

Highlights

  • A Vulkan encoder for APV, the royalty-free Advanced Professional Video codec, plus H.265 Vulkan encode optimizations.
  • vf_fruc_vulkan, an optical-flow frame rate up-conversion filter.
  • A much-improved AAC encoder, H.264 data partitioning, ASTC image support, xHE-AAC encoding via libfdk-xhe-aac, and an iTerm2 inline image muxer.

My take

Vulkan everywhere means GPU acceleration that isn’t tied to one vendor’s stack. That’s good news for anyone transcoding on Linux.
