How-To: A Checklist for Trying the Omarchy Desktop on FreeBSD

Daemonarchy brings the Omarchy desktop to FreeBSD. If that has you curious, here’s a generic checklist for kicking the tires safely.

Review before you install: this is third-party, community software. Read the scripts and README yourself before running anything, and only try it on hardware you can afford to wipe.

Before you start

  • Use a spare machine or a VM. Daemonarchy targets FreeBSD 16.0-CURRENT, which is a development branch.
  • Check hardware support for your Wi-Fi, GPU and Bluetooth in the FreeBSD docs first.
  • Read the Daemonarchy README and release notes end to end.
  • Back up anything on the target disk. The installer will wipe it.

Things worth trying

  • ZFS boot environments: make one before every update so you can roll back.
  • Jails: a lightweight way to isolate services or experiments.
  • bhyve: FreeBSD’s hypervisor for running VMs.

Know the trade-offs

  • Some Linux-only apps and drivers won’t be there.
  • It’s a community port, so expect rough edges and file issues upstream.

God Bless, and Use the Source!
