Kernel Devs Want to Drop RT_GROUP_SCHED: ‘Broken Beyond Repair’

Phoronix covers a proposal to remove CONFIG_RT_GROUP_SCHED. Linutronix engineer Sebastian Andrzej Siewior calls it broken beyond repair: built for cgroup v1, can’t assign runtime under cgroup v2, and blocks SCHED_FIFO/RR when the cgroup has no runtime. Major distros already compile it out.

What’s next

DL fair server already covers RT throttling; Hierarchical CBS work aims to group RT tasks under one deadline config. Some leftover users and a deprecation-first suggestion came up on the list, but momentum favors removal.

My take

Dead features that fight cgroup v2 shouldn’t linger in the kernel. Rip the bandage.

God Bless, and Use the Source!
