Phoronix reports the SoC pull for Linux 7.4 brings basic mainline support for Apple’s M4 and the A18 Pro (the chip in the MacBook Neo). The M4 device trees cover the 14-inch MacBook Pro, both 24-inch iMacs, the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Air and the M4 Mac mini.
Keep expectations sane
Like the M3 work before it, this boots the kernel and gets you a console. Most features aren’t there yet in mainline. The same merge also brings Google’s Tensor G5 (Pixel 10), two unreleased Qualcomm SoCs, a pile of new boards, and the Steam Frame VR headset.
My take
Upstream is where this stuff has to land to last, so every step counts. Downstream kernels are still where the usable Apple silicon experience is for now.
God Bless, and May the Source Be with You!
