MacRumors got its hands on the new PROLED MacBook Pro now that it’s shipping. I covered the launch in my availability update; this is the first hands-on.
What stood out
- Thinner and lighter: the 14-inch is just over three pounds and the 16-inch is four, and the glowing Apple logo is back.
- The OLED panel has true blacks, no mini-LED blooming, and strong HDR brightness. The 16-inch is actually 16.3 inches.
- Touch works for tapping, dragging and pinching, and macOS enlarges some targets. A sturdier hinge helps, but the screen still jiggles a little.
- It uses the same M5 Pro and M5 Max as the mini-LED models, starting at $2,899. That’s roughly a $400 premium for the display, the design and touch.
My take
The screen and the weight are the real reasons to buy. Touch is a bonus, not a must-have. If you’re on an M5 mini-LED, there’s no rush.
