Omarchy has a meetup in Ethiopia now, and it sold out. “Omarchy ETHIOPIA” ran on Saturday, October 17 in Addis Ababa, and the event page lists 177 people as attending, with a waitlist still going.
What happened
- Organizer Nebiyu Elias floated the idea on X on September 1. Six weeks later it was a real, in-person event.
- Three talks: Nix for Omarchy users, the Vicinae desktop launcher, and building an agentic desktop on Fedora 44 using Omarchy principles.
- A local theme competition: nine community themes inspired by Ethiopia, competing for a 10,000 ETB prize pool. Judges and community votes count 50/50.
My take
This is my favorite kind of Linux news. A desktop setup is turning into a global community, and people are building themes from their own culture and landscapes. Well done, Addis.
