Omarchy on the factory floor. The eighth episode of Omarchy Stories, the podcast hosted by Basti, is “I Couldn’t Access My Own Company’s Data” with Alexander Zeitler. It went up on YouTube on October 21 and runs 50 minutes.
The story
- Zeitler is a software veteran who runs a 10-person manufacturing business on Linux and Omarchy, according to the episode description.
- The trigger was a very concrete problem: he found he couldn’t access his own data in a legacy ERP, used Claude to extract it, and started replacing siloed workflows with a system he actually controls.
- “If I can’t access the data in my own company, I cannot make decisions.”
- He says the move isn’t just a plan: “After just over a year, we’ve practically achieved our goal. There’s still some work to be done (for the agents), but the concept is working.”
- The episode has a chapter at 12:18 called “Why Omarchy fits a changing engineering workflow.”
- He also said on X that he showed the live setup, Linux on desktop and server using Omarchy plus AI in manufacturing, to the head of his company’s IT consulting partner, whose verdict was that it “should become the blueprint for German SMEs.”
My take
The thing I like here is the reason, not the distro. “Can I get my own data out?” is the question every small business should ask about every tool. Open formats, local storage and software you can actually inspect are a real safety net. Omarchy being the desktop on a factory floor is a fun bonus.
Have a blessed day! And Happy Hacking!
