PostgreSQL 19 Is Late, and AI Bug Reports Are Part of Why

PostgreSQL usually ships its big release in September or October. Version 19 won’t land until November at the earliest.

Why

Developer Robert Haas says the team has been swamped by a surge of AI- and LLM-generated bug reports, plus the security and bug back-ports to older branches that followed. “LLMs can draft fixes, but those fixes aren’t always correct or compliant with PostgreSQL standards. So, they still need to be reviewed and committed by humans, and those humans have not gotten any smarter between 2025 and 2026.” Time that would have gone into reviewing the release went into back-branch fixes, which led to late reverts.

My take

Same story as the kernel’s fuzz-bot fight this week. AI can find bugs faster than ever, but review is still human, and review is the bottleneck. If you run Postgres, a later release that’s been properly reviewed beats an on-time one that wasn’t.

God Bless, and May the Source Be with You!
