A Great Cloud of Witnesses: From Halloween to Reformation Day to All Saints

This weekend stacked three days on top of each other: Halloween, Reformation Day and All Saints Sunday. I wrote about each of them separately, and looking back they tell one story.

Three days, one story

  • Halloween: Jonathan Cahn’s warning about the darkness people play with (post).
  • Reformation Day: Luther got a revelation from the Spirit that “the righteous will live by faith,” and God’s light broke through (post, and a call to pray for reformation and revival).
  • All Saints: remembering everyone who ran the race before us.

The verse

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1). It comes right after Hebrews 11, the hall of faith: ordinary people who trusted God when it didn’t make sense.

My take

Darkness, then light, then the people who carried the light. The saints aren’t a museum. They’re the crowd in the stands cheering us on, and the same Holy Spirit who filled them fills us. So drop whatever’s slowing you down, fix your eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2), and run your leg of the race.

God Bless, and Use the Source!
