HyprBSD Brings a Hyprland Wayland Desktop (and Steam) to FreeBSD

HyprBSD is a new desktop distribution built on FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE, Phoronix reports. Sam Sheridan, an IT consultant who has run FreeBSD for 25+ years, built it after getting frustrated with the out-of-the-box desktop experience, especially NVIDIA drivers.

What it ships

  • A graphical installer that gets you running in about three minutes.
  • The Hyprland Wayland compositor, plus XWayland for X11 apps.
  • AMD, Intel and NVIDIA graphics support.
  • Steam through FreeBSD’s Linux compatibility layer, with reported success on a range of games.

My take

If you like Omarchy’s Hyprland feel, this is an interesting look at it on a BSD base. It joins GhostBSD and older efforts like PC-BSD and helloSystem. I’ve written up a plan to kick the tires in a VM.

Review before you install: read the release notes yourself, back up your config, and try new versions somewhere you can afford to break first.

God Bless, and Use the Source!
